7 Things You Can Do To Be Happy Now

Count Your Blessings – Taking stock of the great things in your life is a wonderful way to feel happy. Being grateful reminds us that no matter how bad things may seems, there’s plenty of joy to celebrate. I like to count my blessings each morning when I wake up and every evening before I go to sleep. I also find myself counting my blessings when things get stressful. Do what works best for you, but try to work in counting your blessings at least once a day.

Spend Time with Pets – Cuddling with a furry friend has been shown to reduce stress and lower blood pressure. Focusing on a creature that loves unconditionally is a wonderful break in our busy schedules. If you don’t have a pet that’s ok. There are plenty of shelters filled with pets who would love to find a forever home. If you can’t adopt a pet you still get the benefits of a friendly animal by volunteering or even just visiting an animal shelter.

Wish Happiness on Others – This is a trick I learned from reading Tim Ferris’s book Tools of Titans: The Tactics, Routines, and Habits of Billionaires, Icons, and World-Class Performers. The book is filled with wonderful tips and advice for living a full and successful life, and this one is my favorite so far. It comes from Chade -Meng who suggests wishing happiness on others. Choose two people – they can people you know or strangers you see on the street – and simply wish them happiness. You don’t even have to say it out loud, just think to yourself that you would like for them to be happy. It’s profoundly powerful, give it a try.

Volunteer – Volunteering is a fantastic way to feel better and provide assistance to those in need. It’s also a way to connect with those who we might not meet in day-to-day life which can provide a rich and wonderful experience. Spend time at the local food shelf, soup kitchen or check out Volunteermatch to find volunteer opportunities in your community.

Make Plans – Plan a road trip or a trip to visit friends in far away places. Plan a getaway to a place you’ve never been before where you don’t know anyone. It doesn’t matter what you plan, but having plans, something to look forward to and anticipate, is a great way to generate happiness now and during your adventure.

Spend Time with Friends – Gather with friends after work or on the weekend for an hour reconnecting and laughing. Laughter is the best medicine and there’s no better way than to laugh with friends. You’ll wonder why you don’t get together more often.

Cook – None of us prepare meals enough anymore, and it’s a shame because cooking for someone, or having someone cook for you is a sure way to be happy. Giving of yourself, and preparing a meal is a great gift, is an automatic way to feel happy. Give it a try!
